Tim Nicholson

As a child, with 2 elder and more mature sisters, I was a deprived games player.  Partly to counteract this childhood deprivation, I paint pictures (which actively I regard and treat as a game).  Well designed games are fun to play, and produce interesting and sometimes unexpected situations.  Everytime I devise a new painting game, I think it’s absolutely the bee’s knees for about 2 weeks and then dissatisfaction creeps in.  Thus - one goes on trying....

Once one has tuned one’s eye into the paintings of Tim Nicholson, there is the feeling of the landscape of Cranborne Chase. - the abstracted shapes of fields, tree clumps, horses and birds bound together through a repetition of dots, loose marks, and vibrant colour.  The spaces in his compositions coalesce, collapse and overlap; so that forms intermingle.  It is the process of painting that absorbs him.  What Tim Nicholson presents is not a view of a place, but the experience of being there.

Tim Nicholson is the son of modernist architect Kit Nicholson and textile designer EQ Nicholson.  Tim grew up within the world of one of Britain’s foremost artistic families.  He was awarded an art scholarship at Bryanston, managed to avoid going to Art College, and studied architecture before turning his full attention to painting.  He lives and works in Cranborne Chase.
